قٓ ۚ وَٱلْقُرْءَانِ ٱلْمَجِيدِ ﴿١﴾

Qāf. By the honored Qur’ān...

qaf wal-qur'āni l-majīdi

بَلْ عَجِبُوٓا۟ أَن جَآءَهُم مُّنذِرٌۭ مِّنْهُمْ فَقَالَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ هَـٰذَا شَىْءٌ عَجِيبٌ ﴿٢﴾

But they wonder that there has come to them a warner from among themselves, and the disbelievers say, "This is an amazing thing.

bal ʿajibū an jāahum mundhirun min'hum faqāla l-kāfirūna hādhā shayon ʿajībun

أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًۭا ۖ ذَٰلِكَ رَجْعٌۢ بَعِيدٌۭ ﴿٣﴾

When we have died and have become dust, [we will return to life]? That is a distant [i.e., unlikely] return."

a-idhā mit'nā wakunnā turāban dhālika rajʿun baʿīdun

قَدْ عَلِمْنَا مَا تَنقُصُ ٱلْأَرْضُ مِنْهُمْ ۖ وَعِندَنَا كِتَـٰبٌ حَفِيظٌۢ ﴿٤﴾

We know what the earth diminishes [i.e., consumes] of them, and with Us is a retaining record.

qad ʿalim'nā mā tanquṣu l-arḍu min'hum waʿindanā kitābun ḥafīẓun

بَلْ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِٱلْحَقِّ لَمَّا جَآءَهُمْ فَهُمْ فِىٓ أَمْرٍۢ مَّرِيجٍ ﴿٥﴾

But they denied the truth when it came to them, so they are in a confused condition.

bal kadhabū bil-ḥaqi lammā jāahum fahum fī amrin marījin

أَفَلَمْ يَنظُرُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَوْقَهُمْ كَيْفَ بَنَيْنَـٰهَا وَزَيَّنَّـٰهَا وَمَا لَهَا مِن فُرُوجٍۢ ﴿٦﴾

Have they not looked at the heaven above them - how We structured it and adorned it and [how] it has no rifts?

afalam yanẓurū ilā l-samāi fawqahum kayfa banaynāhā wazayyannāhā wamā lahā min furūjin

وَٱلْأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَـٰهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ وَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوْجٍۭ بَهِيجٍۢ ﴿٧﴾

And the earth - We spread it out and cast therein firmly set mountains and made grow therein [something] of every beautiful kind,

wal-arḍa madadnāhā wa-alqaynā fīhā rawāsiya wa-anbatnā fīhā min kulli zawjin bahījin

تَبْصِرَةًۭ وَذِكْرَىٰ لِكُلِّ عَبْدٍۢ مُّنِيبٍۢ ﴿٨﴾

Giving insight and a reminder for every servant who turns [to Allāh].

tabṣiratan wadhik'rā likulli ʿabdin munībin

وَنَزَّلْنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءًۭ مُّبَـٰرَكًۭا فَأَنۢبَتْنَا بِهِۦ جَنَّـٰتٍۢ وَحَبَّ ٱلْحَصِيدِ ﴿٩﴾

And We have sent down blessed rain from the sky and made grow thereby gardens and grain from the harvest

wanazzalnā mina l-samāi māan mubārakan fa-anbatnā bihi jannātin waḥabba l-ḥaṣīdi

وَٱلنَّخْلَ بَاسِقَـٰتٍۢ لَّهَا طَلْعٌۭ نَّضِيدٌۭ ﴿١٠﴾

And lofty palm trees having fruit arranged in layers -

wal-nakhla bāsiqātin lahā ṭalʿun naḍīdun

رِّزْقًۭا لِّلْعِبَادِ ۖ وَأَحْيَيْنَا بِهِۦ بَلْدَةًۭ مَّيْتًۭا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ ٱلْخُرُوجُ ﴿١١﴾

As provision for the servants, and We have given life thereby to a dead land. Thus is the emergence [i.e., resurrection].

riz'qan lil'ʿibādi wa-aḥyaynā bihi baldatan maytan kadhālika l-khurūju

كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍۢ وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلرَّسِّ وَثَمُودُ ﴿١٢﴾

The people of Noah denied before them, and the companions of the well and Thamūd

kadhabat qablahum qawmu nūḥin wa-aṣḥābu l-rasi wathamūdu

وَعَادٌۭ وَفِرْعَوْنُ وَإِخْوَٰنُ لُوطٍۢ ﴿١٣﴾

And ʿAad and Pharaoh and the brothers [i.e., people] of Lot

waʿādun wafir'ʿawnu wa-ikh'wānu lūṭin

وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْأَيْكَةِ وَقَوْمُ تُبَّعٍۢ ۚ كُلٌّۭ كَذَّبَ ٱلرُّسُلَ فَحَقَّ وَعِيدِ ﴿١٤﴾

And the companions of the thicket and the people of Tubbaʿ. All denied the messengers, so My threat was justly fulfilled.

wa-aṣḥābu l-aykati waqawmu tubbaʿin kullun kadhaba l-rusula faḥaqqa waʿīdi

أَفَعَيِينَا بِٱلْخَلْقِ ٱلْأَوَّلِ ۚ بَلْ هُمْ فِى لَبْسٍۢ مِّنْ خَلْقٍۢ جَدِيدٍۢ ﴿١٥﴾

Did We fail in the first creation? But they are in confusion over a new creation.

afaʿayīnā bil-khalqi l-awali bal hum fī labsin min khalqin jadīdin

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ وَنَعْلَمُ مَا تُوَسْوِسُ بِهِۦ نَفْسُهُۥ ۖ وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ حَبْلِ ٱلْوَرِيدِ ﴿١٦﴾

And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein.

walaqad khalaqnā l-insāna wanaʿlamu mā tuwaswisu bihi nafsuhu wanaḥnu aqrabu ilayhi min ḥabli l-warīdi

إِذْ يَتَلَقَّى ٱلْمُتَلَقِّيَانِ عَنِ ٱلْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ قَعِيدٌۭ ﴿١٧﴾

When the two receivers [i.e., recording angels] receive, seated on the right and on the left.

idh yatalaqqā l-mutalaqiyāni ʿani l-yamīni waʿani l-shimāli qaʿīdun

مَّا يَلْفِظُ مِن قَوْلٍ إِلَّا لَدَيْهِ رَقِيبٌ عَتِيدٌۭ ﴿١٨﴾

He [i.e., man] utters no word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record].

mā yalfiẓu min qawlin illā ladayhi raqībun ʿatīdun

وَجَآءَتْ سَكْرَةُ ٱلْمَوْتِ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ مَا كُنتَ مِنْهُ تَحِيدُ ﴿١٩﴾

And the intoxication of death will bring the truth; that is what you were trying to avoid.

wajāat sakratu l-mawti bil-ḥaqi dhālika mā kunta min'hu taḥīdu

وَنُفِخَ فِى ٱلصُّورِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمُ ٱلْوَعِيدِ ﴿٢٠﴾

And the Horn will be blown. That is the Day of [carrying out] the threat.

wanufikha fī l-ṣūri dhālika yawmu l-waʿīdi

وَجَآءَتْ كُلُّ نَفْسٍۢ مَّعَهَا سَآئِقٌۭ وَشَهِيدٌۭ ﴿٢١﴾

And every soul will come, with it a driver and a witness.

wajāat kullu nafsin maʿahā sāiqun washahīdun

لَّقَدْ كُنتَ فِى غَفْلَةٍۢ مِّنْ هَـٰذَا فَكَشَفْنَا عَنكَ غِطَآءَكَ فَبَصَرُكَ ٱلْيَوْمَ حَدِيدٌۭ ﴿٢٢﴾

[It will be said], "You were certainly in unmindfulness of this, and We have removed from you your cover, so your sight, this Day, is sharp."

laqad kunta fī ghaflatin min hādhā fakashafnā ʿanka ghiṭāaka fabaṣaruka l-yawma ḥadīdun

وَقَالَ قَرِينُهُۥ هَـٰذَا مَا لَدَىَّ عَتِيدٌ ﴿٢٣﴾

And his companion, [the angel], will say, "This [record] is what is with me, prepared."

waqāla qarīnuhu hādhā mā ladayya ʿatīdun

أَلْقِيَا فِى جَهَنَّمَ كُلَّ كَفَّارٍ عَنِيدٍۢ ﴿٢٤﴾

[Allāh will say], "Throw into Hell every obstinate disbeliever,

alqiyā fī jahannama kulla kaffārin ʿanīdin

مَّنَّاعٍۢ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍۢ مُّرِيبٍ ﴿٢٥﴾

Preventer of good, aggressor, and doubter,

mannāʿin lil'khayri muʿ'tadin murībin

ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَأَلْقِيَاهُ فِى ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلشَّدِيدِ ﴿٢٦﴾

Who made [as equal] with Allāh another deity; then throw him into the severe punishment."

alladhī jaʿala maʿa l-lahi ilāhan ākhara fa-alqiyāhu fī l-ʿadhābi l-shadīdi

۞ قَالَ قَرِينُهُۥ رَبَّنَا مَآ أَطْغَيْتُهُۥ وَلَـٰكِن كَانَ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍۭ بَعِيدٍۢ ﴿٢٧﴾

His [devil] companion will say, "Our Lord, I did not make him transgress, but he [himself] was in extreme error."

qāla qarīnuhu rabbanā mā aṭghaytuhu walākin kāna fī ḍalālin baʿīdin

قَالَ لَا تَخْتَصِمُوا۟ لَدَىَّ وَقَدْ قَدَّمْتُ إِلَيْكُم بِٱلْوَعِيدِ ﴿٢٨﴾

[Allāh] will say, "Do not dispute before Me, while I had already presented to you the threat [i.e., warning].

qāla lā takhtaṣimū ladayya waqad qaddamtu ilaykum bil-waʿīdi

مَا يُبَدَّلُ ٱلْقَوْلُ لَدَىَّ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ بِظَلَّـٰمٍۢ لِّلْعَبِيدِ ﴿٢٩﴾

The word [i.e., decree] will not be changed with Me, and never will I be unjust to the servants."

mā yubaddalu l-qawlu ladayya wamā anā biẓallāmin lil'ʿabīdi

يَوْمَ نَقُولُ لِجَهَنَّمَ هَلِ ٱمْتَلَأْتِ وَتَقُولُ هَلْ مِن مَّزِيدٍۢ ﴿٣٠﴾

On the Day We will say to Hell, "Have you been filled?" and it will say, "Are there some more,"

yawma naqūlu lijahannama hali im'talati wataqūlu hal min mazīdin

وَأُزْلِفَتِ ٱلْجَنَّةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ غَيْرَ بَعِيدٍ ﴿٣١﴾

And Paradise will be brought near to the righteous, not far,

wa-uz'lifati l-janatu lil'muttaqīna ghayra baʿīdin

هَـٰذَا مَا تُوعَدُونَ لِكُلِّ أَوَّابٍ حَفِيظٍۢ ﴿٣٢﴾

[It will be said], "This is what you were promised - for every returner [to Allāh] and keeper [of His covenant].

hādhā mā tūʿadūna likulli awwābin ḥafīẓin

مَّنْ خَشِىَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنَ بِٱلْغَيْبِ وَجَآءَ بِقَلْبٍۢ مُّنِيبٍ ﴿٣٣﴾

Who feared the Most Merciful in the unseen and came with a heart returning [in repentance].

man khashiya l-raḥmāna bil-ghaybi wajāa biqalbin munībin

ٱدْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَـٰمٍۢ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمُ ٱلْخُلُودِ ﴿٣٤﴾

Enter it in peace. This is the Day of Eternity."

ud'khulūhā bisalāmin dhālika yawmu l-khulūdi

لَهُم مَّا يَشَآءُونَ فِيهَا وَلَدَيْنَا مَزِيدٌۭ ﴿٣٥﴾

They will have whatever they wish therein, and with Us is more.

lahum mā yashāūna fīhā waladaynā mazīdun

وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّن قَرْنٍ هُمْ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُم بَطْشًۭا فَنَقَّبُوا۟ فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ هَلْ مِن مَّحِيصٍ ﴿٣٦﴾

And how many a generation before them did We destroy who were greater than them in [striking] power and had explored throughout the lands. Is there any place of escape?

wakam ahlaknā qablahum min qarnin hum ashaddu min'hum baṭshan fanaqqabū fī l-bilādi hal min maḥīṣin

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَذِكْرَىٰ لِمَن كَانَ لَهُۥ قَلْبٌ أَوْ أَلْقَى ٱلسَّمْعَ وَهُوَ شَهِيدٌۭ ﴿٣٧﴾

Indeed in that is a reminder for whoever has a heart or who listens while he is present [in mind].

inna fī dhālika ladhik'rā liman kāna lahu qalbun aw alqā l-samʿa wahuwa shahīdun

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا فِى سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٍۢ وَمَا مَسَّنَا مِن لُّغُوبٍۢ ﴿٣٨﴾

And We did certainly create the heavens and earth and what is between them in six days, and there touched Us no weariness.

walaqad khalaqnā l-samāwāti wal-arḍa wamā baynahumā fī sittati ayyāmin wamā massanā min lughūbin

فَٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ ٱلشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ ٱلْغُرُوبِ ﴿٣٩﴾

So be patient, [O Muḥammad], over what they say and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting,

fa-iṣ'bir ʿalā mā yaqūlūna wasabbiḥ biḥamdi rabbika qabla ṭulūʿi l-shamsi waqabla l-ghurūbi

وَمِنَ ٱلَّيْلِ فَسَبِّحْهُ وَأَدْبَـٰرَ ٱلسُّجُودِ ﴿٤٠﴾

And [in part] of the night exalt Him and after prostration [i.e., prayer].

wamina al-layli fasabbiḥ'hu wa-adbāra l-sujūdi

وَٱسْتَمِعْ يَوْمَ يُنَادِ ٱلْمُنَادِ مِن مَّكَانٍۢ قَرِيبٍۢ ﴿٤١﴾

And listen on the Day when the Caller will call out from a place that is near -

wa-is'tamiʿ yawma yunādi l-munādi min makānin qarībin

يَوْمَ يَسْمَعُونَ ٱلصَّيْحَةَ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمُ ٱلْخُرُوجِ ﴿٤٢﴾

The Day they will hear the blast [of the Horn] in truth. That is the Day of Emergence [from the graves].

yawma yasmaʿūna l-ṣayḥata bil-ḥaqi dhālika yawmu l-khurūji

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نُحْىِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَإِلَيْنَا ٱلْمَصِيرُ ﴿٤٣﴾

Indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and to Us is the destination

innā naḥnu nuḥ'yī wanumītu wa-ilaynā l-maṣīru

يَوْمَ تَشَقَّقُ ٱلْأَرْضُ عَنْهُمْ سِرَاعًۭا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ حَشْرٌ عَلَيْنَا يَسِيرٌۭ ﴿٤٤﴾

On the Day the earth breaks away from them [and they emerge] rapidly; that is a gathering easy for Us.

yawma tashaqqaqu l-arḍu ʿanhum sirāʿan dhālika ḥashrun ʿalaynā yasīrun

نَّحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ ۖ وَمَآ أَنتَ عَلَيْهِم بِجَبَّارٍۢ ۖ فَذَكِّرْ بِٱلْقُرْءَانِ مَن يَخَافُ وَعِيدِ ﴿٤٥﴾

We are most knowing of what they say, and you are not over them a tyrant. But remind by the Qur’ān whoever fears My threat.

naḥnu aʿlamu bimā yaqūlūna wamā anta ʿalayhim bijabbārin fadhakkir bil-qur'āni man yakhāfu waʿīdi
